How To Secure Your OS
Good to see you again ! Here I am with another Cyber Security Tutorial. Today I'm going to show you how to secure your OS. OS means Operating System. I think you have a big question. Why I am not teaching you how to hack into other computer, identify and remove malware and other advanced things ? Well, before you are going to help each other to be safe you have to know how to secure yourself. Am I right ? Enough talking. Your computer is at a risk. Let's fix it !
Use licensed version of Windows OS
Make sure you use a licensed version of you operating system. Don't use cracked or pirated ones. If your windows has expired make sure you Activate it as soon as possible.Disable Unused Users
- Right Click on Computer
- Manage
- Local Users and Groups
- Users, then disable those users that are not required.
Take updates regularly
The next step is to take updates regularly for Windows OS. As I mentioned in my previous cyber security post outdated software is the major vulnerability in your system. So when a new update available for your Windows OS install them. Make sure you set them to install automatically.
To set this up,
- First go to Control Panel and select System and Security.
- Then click on Turn automatic updating on or off under Windows Updates. Choose Install updates automatically.
Make your Screen saver password protected
You should always Configure a password protected Screen Saver. So no one can log into your PC without entering the password. To set this up, please follow this path .
- Right click on the desktop and select Personalization. Then select Screen Saver.
- Now right there check the box for " On resume, display logon screen ". Click Apply then OK .
Disable Autoplay for Removable Media
I'm sure you have heard about virus infected pen drives, USB , etc... Maybe you have experienced one. But we didn't open anything in them. It just happened. When we connect the device it begin to autorun the virus. It may seems impossible to stop it but there is one way.
- On search box type Edit Group Policy.
- A window will pop up. Under the Computer configuration go to Administrative Templates. Then select Windows Components .
- Then click on AutoPlay Policies.
4. Double click on Turn off Autoplay and select Enable.
Conclusion
Taking care of your computer is a little bit complicated task. There are many vulnerabilities on every system. Nothing is 100% secure even Pentagon. There are at least 1 vulnerability. But we have to protect our PC as much as possible. Follow this steps to secure your OS the core of your PC to stay safe. These are just basics but can be really helpful.
